What is it that drives us to wake
up tomorrow? What is so interesting that you would leave the comfort of the
bed, the warmth that envelops you ? I wonder about this one force that murders
the sloth in you, making you energetic
and alive.
There got to be something, really.
You see, snails move themselves in the morning in pursuit of fresh green leaves
. Snails have wives and kids to feed too, I swear. Good farmers, I say, need to
wake up in the first lights of the dawn, to get rid of those snails before the
vegetables are damaged. It's a race
,really, this life.
Even snails have reasons to get
going. I bet the same thing for ants, chickens and toads.
But we are no freaking animals, my
friend; we put reason in every single work we do-the cost, utility, schedule
and quantity, and what is the reason for our mere existence?
Some of us cannot answer that question
in particular- and decided that his life is a pursuit of happiness. Happiness ,
here, is defined as material. If this is the only
life ,then one must make hay while the sun shines - and in order to do so one
needs money-said Mr Imran Khan. Easy, ain't it? You don't know what to do with
life, so what else to do, rather than have fun with it?
And so begins our pursuit for material. Wealth, as they call it. I'm 19
and I am thinking about how much money will I make when I'm 30 with four kids.
I feel seriously guilty. This feels so wrong. How did the trinkets of the world
fool me and take me away? My, guilty pleasures, they are. I am 19, and I was
thinking about a big house with swimming pools, fancy cars and immeasurable
wealth. It feels so good, really, your guts jump with your imaginations. There's
a stream of crystal clear water running around the house compound. Trees in the
garden blossom in a rainbow of red and yellow, while the children run from end
to end in laughter.
As if you'll live forever.
Of course the thought is a pleasure, of
course.
The house smells of fresh baked
bread , new parchment, and lavender. Flowers colour the tapestry, and pictures
of a happy family hung all over.
No. This is so wrong.
So wrong.
Our age is short , my friend, there is no point denying that. The pleasures
of owning a supercar is supershort, adding to the fact that the amount of time
taken during the rides will be superlittle. The scrumptious feeling of hot
cheese and sprinkled chilly last for a few seconds while they reside on the
tongue, then it is gone. Gone , my friend, forever. Material beclouded our
minds and led us astray from the way we should be.
Being so rich does not make you happy. Michael Jackson, with money so
much, but so unhappy he switched his colours. Off. A big chunk of the Men of
the West who have so much wealth are accustomed to seeing psychiatrists . Sweden
and Switzerland, who provide the most welfare to their citizens, also have the
highest suicide rates.
Money gives so much utility to a
person that one does not stop seeking for it. I do not agree, my friend, with
the law of equi-marginal utility, when it states that there will be a point of
equilibrum, where men can be satisfied with a certain amount of goods he
buy. He will always want more.
There's no problem, really, if you are aiming to be a billionaire by the
age of 30. I can be your partner if you like, that will be fun. The problem
with the laws of utility is that it is so wrong. So self-centred, so selfish a
system, so crooked, I don't know what to say. The snails I mentioned above
shouldn't have destroyed all the crops for his utility and satisfaction. Pity
the farmer, really. Then the snails will have another day to enjoy fresh green
leaves. The farmer in the other hand shouldn't have started so early to get rid
of the snails. The snails really have to feed their family, so why don't we let
them for a little while?
"Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return"
(Ali-Imran;14)
"Say, "Shall I inform you of [something] better than that? For those who fear Allah will be gardens in the presence of their Lord beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and approval from Allah . And Allah is Seeing of [His] servants -"
(Ali-Imran; 15)
The theory of maximum satisfaction brings to the overproduction of corn
and potatoes and all kind of crops in Europe, there were mountains of barley
and seas of beans. Meanwhile in Africa, there's none of those. The principles
of materialism brings fortune to those who have money and influence, while
those who are poor can die in masses. My, this is the law of the jungle, my
friend. Survival of the fittest.
Let's say, I can indulge in my
gigantic villa , while my neighbours can starve to death, to make it simple.
Long live the system!
I thought about the muslims of old, when they were my age, what were
they thinking about? Kids in Syria can die as martyrs, while I am stuck here
thinking about my riches. This, is really unfair, because their share in the
Hereafter will be so very big , compared to us all. It's only logic , ain't it?
We get more in this world, we get less in the Hereafter? Yeah, I suppose.
Unless you, my friend, are a really good man. And you really are.
Peace.
Alhamdulillah , good piece. I'm touched.
